Assistant Director of Language and Learning Services,
Speech-Language Pathologist

An experienced speech-language pathologist, Kara Nelson is a pivotal team member at Winston Center. She supports our mission to provide the best possible care for clients with compassionate, focused and knowledgeable service.

Kara’s responsibilities include assisting in supervising and supporting Winston Center’s speech language pathology team. Additionally, she assesses, diagnoses and treats clients for dyslexia and other language disorders and evaluates new clients for language, learning and executive function challenges. After diagnosing a condition, she uses clinical and practical knowledge to craft personalized treatment goals and lesson plans, working with clients during one-on-one sessions to discover strengths, manage symptoms and achieve goals.

Kara began her SLP career as a Winston Center clinical fellow, but she also has experience with pediatric care in a school setting, as well as adult care specializing in voice and Parkinson’s-related pathologies.

Kara earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication disorders from Eastern Washington University. She is licensed in both Washington and Idaho.

Deeply committed to helping others, Kara volunteers at the Avalon Senior Center as a communication partner and with Tremble Clefts, a Parkinson’s singing and voice group. She’s also an avid hiker and kayaker who enjoys exploring the incredible nature around the Pacific Northwest and Spokane.
